CSTWT Receives $3,000 Worth of Furniture. With the increasing needs of our clients, CSTWT continues to increase its services.  What does that mean? More desks, file cabinets, therapy chairs, and shelving are a must. With the help of the generous donations of Realtime Results, LLC, we can continue to provide quality mental health and youth services to our clients.  A big thanks and much love to Realtime Results and their partner companies for their big hearts and  philanthropic way of doing business.  With continued donations like these CSTWT can thrive and continue to succeed in these difficult economic times.

As any parent will tell you, when youth are hungry their minds become occupied with hunger and little else. More often than not, many of the refugee youth in our Open Door After School Program are not getting enough food and/or enough of the nutritious foods that they need to keep them growing, learning, and enjoying their young lives. We need your help.

The Center was honored to receive proceeds from the “Instruments For Peace” benefit concert, heldJanuary 8 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in University City . Opera singer Julia Bullock, accompanied by pianist Sandra Geary, gave an outstanding performance, and her beautiful soprano captured everyone's heart. Last year, while studying for her master's degree in music at the University of Rochester, Bullock decided she wanted to give back to nonprofits that help kids in the performing arts, using her musical talent. She chose the Center's International Play Ground and the Shropshire Music Foundation as the recipients of all proceeds from the benefit. And Bullock didn’t just sing — she also organized the event, which included a silent art auction and hors d’oeuvres. The Center is grateful for Bullock’s generous heart, incredible talent, and boundless energy!

The 2010-2011 school year has brought many changes to CSTWT’s Open Door After School Program, including a new focus on one-on-one attention through home visits and mentoring and more focused group time. We wanted to give you a taste of what our mentors experience in their time with the energetic students they work with.

Understand the past experiences, current challenges, and successes of many refugees to the US through this former CSTWT client’s story.

Marcelle , a small-business owner in his home country, was educated in France. He speaks several languages. With the possibility of  the election of a new, democratic government in his country, Marcelle became active in voter registration and other political activities. When his brother, who was also politically active, was arrested, Marcelle fled the country. He was invited back, with the promise of safety, to participate in a conference on the possibility of collaboration between the candidates. Believing the promise, Marcelle returned, committed to helping his country build a democratic government. As soon as he entered the country, however, he was arrested. He was told that his brother had been killed and that he would be punished because of his “subversive” activities. He was beaten, subjected to application of electrical shocks to his fingernails and toenails, kept in a small box and threatened with death. Marcelle was released, but he knew that the reprieve was only temporary. He fled the country for the United States, where he applied for asylum.
